Did you know?

Justices of the Peace, as we know them today, are a British tradition that began in the 14th Century to uphold the King’s peace. They were esteemed gentlemen appointed within the British feudal system to deal with minor offences. The role spread to the British colonies when the Empire was expanding. In 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip was the first JP in Australia.

When Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859, this also coincided with the very first Justices of the Peace for and in the State of Queensland. Today, JPs and C.Decs are still highly respected members of the community, but come from all walks of life and undergo training prior to being appointed.

QJA is committed to preserving this long-standing traditional office, by promoting a diverse and active JP and C.Dec community that is well-equiped to take on the ever evolving responsibilities of this Office in the 21st century

As a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declarations in Queensland, there are 7 good reasons to join a professional peak body.
